A First: Nagaland police officer gets Army Chief Commendation

‘PR Zeliang is the only police officer in the entire country who was awarded COAS Commendation during Army Day, 2016’

A police officer from Peren district in Nagaland has been accorded the Army Chief’s Commendation on the eve of Army Day, army authorities has informed, calling it the first of its kind. PR Zeliang is the only police officer that the army has honoured with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation on Army Day in the entire country, authorities have said.
PR Zeliang, sub inspector of the Nagaland Police from Peren district was awarded with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation in recognition of ‘his dedication to duty and commitment to wipe out evils which obstruct the development of Nagaland,’ a press release from the army’s establishment said on Monday, February 8.
“The police officer was awarded the Commendation Card for an operation, along with Assam Rifles, which led to the apprehension of a dreaded UG cadre and recovery of large quality of explosives and war like stores,” the press release explained.
On February 1 this year, the police officer was decorated with the award by the commander of 6-sector Assam Rifles in presence of the commandant of the 18th Assam Rifles at Jalukie, in Peren district.
“The felicitation Ceremony was witnessed by a fully packed arena to include Mr Peter Lichamo, DC Peren, Mr Vikluto John, SP Peren, family members of the Police Officer and troops of 18 Assam Rifles,” the press release said.
Sub Inspector PR Zeliang is the only police officer in the entire country who is being awarded with the COAS Commendation, the army authorities said.
“It was heartening to see the officer and his family members in tears, when Commander, 6 Sector Assam Rifles pinned the medal. The ceremony culminated with National Anthem followed by refreshments. The DC & SP also commended the efforts of Assam Rifles for living up to the true spirit of the ‘Friends of the Hill People,’” the army’s handout added.
