Dimapur, August 21 (EMN): Speaking on the occasion of the World Honey Bee Day at Chendang village, on August 19, senior scientist and head of KVK Tuensang, Dr. Keviletsu Khate, said 80% of the crops are pollinated by honey bees making them guardians of the food chain and bio-diversity, therefore farmers need to understand its importance and have productive partnership with honey bees.
Dr. Khate also said the environment would never have been what it is today if it weren’t for honey bees. He added that honey bees not only gives us honey but plays an invaluable contribution to our ecosystem around the world.
Assistant Director (Eleutheros Christian Society), Chonshen Soted; chairman of Chendang Village Council and Chingmei Village Honey Bee Keepers representative also spoke on the occasion.
Thematic presentation on World Honey Bee celebration was followed by a film show.
In an interaction and discussion session with honey bee keepers of the area, the farmers shared their experiences in bee keeping. The session was conducted on the theme ‘Honey bee-keeping and the way forward,’ to understand the gaps and usher in better approaches for successful bee-keeping and honey production.
During interaction many honey bee farmers shared that lack of honey processing and bottling plant has direct impact on honey production and marketing. Despite its promotion by different departments, they said many farmers are disheartened by limited marketing avenues which they believe is due to non availability of honey processing facilities, they also expressed hope that if any such arrangement can be made to help bee keepers in Tuensang, honey production will increase as most farmers in the areas are well trained in bee keeping.
The programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tuensang, with participation of bee keeping farmers from Tuensang and neighbouring villages.
