7th conclave of Ramalingaswamy Fellows underway in Manipur

Imphal,August 29 (EMN): The first ever four day 7th conclave of Ramalingaswamy (RLS)Fellows is underway in Imphal with active participation of more than 120 scientists including Indian scientists working overseas.
Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla inaugurated the conclave at the classic grande hotel. RLS Fellow Dr Meenakshi Munshi who is the adviser of Department of Biotechnology,Ministry of Science and Technology, Prof Sudhir K Sopory of International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology New Delhi and Director Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo, Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development Imphal also attended the inaugural function.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Dr Heptulla said even though Manipur is often seen as a trouble-torn State by most of the people living outside the State, it is no longer so. On the contrary, it is quite peaceful now. Stating that Manipur is very rich in biodiversity and it occupies 8th position in the world in terms of biodiversity richness, she said, “We should exploit these resources in a sustainable manner and scientists should go to fields rather than confining themselves in laboratories.”
Loktak Lake alone is quite rich in biodiversity but the lake is decaying day by day, she felt. She also expressed keen desire for private firms to undertake exclusive research works about different varieties of medicinal plants found in Manipur. In the absence of proper infrastructure, Manipur is witnessing a situation of brain-drain, she said.
As compared to other States of India, Manipur is still backward . Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been approached repeatedly and talked about introduction of flying doctors in Manipur. Now the DoNER Ministry has agreed to sanction Rs 25 crore for the same project, she continued.
A group of young manipuri models staged a fashion show displaying the rich bio resources of Manipur as part of opening ceremony of Conclave which is schedule to conclude on August 31.This is the first ever event in entire North East which falls among the World’s top 10 biodiversity hotspots, according to Dinabandhoo Sahoo.
Many scientists including Indian scientists working overseas in various areas of biological sciences/Biotechnology are scheduled to present more than eighty scientific papers and lecturers besides mentor lecturers by Prof SK Sopory,Vice Chancellor Prof Anuradha Lohia of Presidency University Kolkata and Dr Gitanjali Yadav of National Institute of Plant genome research New Delhi.
