535 qualify for civic polls

Kohima, Jan. 11: After scrutiny of nomination papers filed for the forthcoming election to municipal and town councils in Nagaland on Wednesday, 535 candidates from 26 urban local bodies were declared valid.
According to the State Election Commission, out of a total of 549 who filed their nomination, 3 Congress and 6 independent candidates for Longleng Town Council, 1 independent candidate for Zunheboto Town Council, 1 NPF candidate for Peren Town Council, 1 NPF and 1 BJP for Dimapur Municipal Council, and 1 independent candidate for Pungro Town Council were ‘not validly nominated.’ The Kohima Municipal Council, Mokokchung Municipal Council, Changtongya Town Council, Medziphema Town Council, Tuensang Town Council and Mon Town Council have recorded nil nominations following stiff opposition by tribe organisations against the state government’s decision to implement 33% women reservation.
The municipal and town councils election is scheduled to be held on February 1. The application for revision of the order of authority scrutinizing the nomination will be held on January 12 till January 14 (3 pm) while the decision on revision application filed will be made on January 16.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is January 17 (up to 3 pm). The final list of contesting candidates and list of polling stations will also be brought out on the same day.
