Dimapur, June 19: A Himalayan black bear cub was rescued from Yaongyimti village in Mokokchung district and later gave away to Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP) in Dimapur.
The officer in-charge of the NZP, Obed Bohovi Swu, told Eastern Mirror that the cub was found by the villagers at a farm owned by Achila Tsukjem. It was rescued and brought to the NZP on June 7.
According to the director of NZP, Dr. Prabhat Kumar, the NZP has five Himalayan black bears which are not found in most parts of India. They are often used for sealing exchange deals with other zoos. “For any exchange between zoos, they must obtain the green signal from the central zoo authority,” he added. Kumar also said that the zoo bartered a Himalayan black bear for a pair of wolves earlier this year.
