Dimapur, May 18: For the past three weeks, Dimapur traffic police has been cracking the whip on vehicles using ‘illegal headlights’, especially Light Emitting Diode (LED), and modified exhaust pipes that cause noise pollution.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) told Eastern Mirror that traffic personnel have been keeping check on motorists at night in and around the commercial hub.

“We check for illegal lights and pipes at night; and request them to take it down on the spot,” said the ACP. The use of LED lights and modified exhaust pipes were illegal under section 177 of the Indian Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) of 1988, he said.

The ACP informed that any motor vehicle that is modified will be apprehended and can even be slapped with a fine under the MVA.

“Only what has been issued by the company of the vehicle is allowed, otherwise modified lights and pipes are illegal,” informed the official.

Another traffic official said that if any motorists are seen with modified lights during the day, they are asked to take down their lights even then.

“After the checking started, the number of vehicles with LED lights has been reduced drastically but we still have more to go as Dimapur has maximum modified vehicles,” informed the official.

While stressing that the high intensity lights cause momentary blindness to the driver coming from the opposite direction, the traffic official said that it hampers the driver from correctly judging the distance between the other vehicles.

The traffic police also discouraged auto workshops/mechanics from removing the original fittings off vehicles.
