183rd death anniversary of Gambhir Singh observed

Imphal, Jan. 9: The 183rd death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh was observed across the state on Monday. The state level observation was held under the aegis of the State Archeology, department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur at the Samadhi of Maharaj at Langthabal, about 6 km south of here on Monday.

Eminent scholars Padmashree RKJhalajit Singh and B Kulachandra presided over the function as chief guest and functional president respectively.

Speaking during the occasion, Padmashree RK Jhalajit said that the people of the state should remember Maharaj Gambhir Singh who liberated Manipur from the hands of the Burmese following the Seven Year Devastation (1819-1826).
After this, Maharaja Gambhir Singh reconsolidated the war ravaged populations, he said. Maharaja Gambhir’s role in maintaining the boundary of Manipur after the liberation should also be remembered by the people. Padmashree Jhalajit also expressed the need to observe the birth anniversary of the king in future.

Holding a public march from Langthabal to Hao grounf, the United People’s Front also observed the death anniversary as National Reconsolidation Day at the Hao ground in Imphal. There are also reports of the event being observed at various places by other organizations.
